Dr. Churchill previously led the Department of Radiology, the medical school and the health sciences center during his more than 20 years with MU. Dr. Churchill arrived at MU in 1987 as chair and professor of radiology. After three years as the medical school's vice dean, Dr. Churchill became interim dean in 1998. He also served as interim vice chancellor and chief executive officer for MU's health sciences center until 2000, when he returned to the Department of Radiology.

In addition to his experience leading the medical school and health sciences center, as department chair Dr. Churchill recruited a full complement of radiologists, ran a highly successful radiology training program and directed a powerful research program that encompasses nano and molecular medicine. In 2005, he helped open Missouri Radiology Imaging Center, one of the most advanced resonance imaging facilities in the state.

Before joining MU, Dr. Churchill served as vice chair of radiology at Loyola University in Maywood, Ill., where he completed medical school, residency and fellowship training. He also completed a fellowship at General Electric and served the company as an adviser.

As dean, Dr. Churchill oversees the medical school's more than 675 faculty members, 1,500 staff members, and 1,000 medical students, residents, fellows and other students completing advanced degrees. He also is responsible for University Physicians, the practice plan for the medical school's faculty physicians, and he works closely with the medical school's more than 7,700 physician alumni. The MU Medical Alumni Organization presented him with an Honorary Medical Alumni Award in 2004.

Dr. Churchill also directs the school's strategic planning process, which follows the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program framework for quality improvement and innovation. The medical school adopted the Baldrige criteria as its management model in 2009 under his leadership.
