55th Annual Medical Alumni Awards

Award Reception and Dinner

Ten alumni and supporters of the University of Missouri School of Medicine will be recognized at the school's 55th Annual Medical Alumni Awards reception and dinner on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. All school alumni and friends may attend both the reception and dinner for $65. The Citation of Merit, the school's highest honor, will be awarded to J. Regan Thomas, MD '72, chair and Francis L. Lederer Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He previously served as chair of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at Saint Louis University, as well as president of the American Academy of of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Outstanding Young Physician Awards, which are awarded to alumni age 45 and younger, will be presented to Matthew Bechtold, MD '01; Bryan Cotton, MD, Res '02; and Mitch Humphreys, MD '00. Dr. Bechtold is an assistant professor of gastroenterology at the University of Missouri. Dr. Cotton is an associate professor of surgery and director of the surgical critical care fellowship program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Dr. Humphreys is an associate professor of urology at the Mayo College of Medicine and Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.

Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Karen Edison, MD '89; Douglas Hughes, MD '81; and Larry Marti, MD '67. Dr. Edison is chair and Philip C. Anderson Professor in Dermatology, director of the Center for Health Policy, and medical director of the Missouri Telehealth Network at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Dr. Hughes is associate dean for academic affairs and a professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Marti is an orthopaedic surgeon and community leader in Rolla, Mo.

Honorary Medical Alumni Awards will be presented to Les Hall, MD; Lowell Kruse; and Roberta Settergren. Dr. Hall is senior associate dean for clinical affairs and chief medical officer at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and University of Missouri Health Care. Mr. Kruse is former president and CEO of Heartland Health in St. Joseph, Mo. Mrs. Settergren has served as a senior administrative assistant for nine dean's administrations at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.

MU's medical alumni award events are held in conjunction with the annual convention of the Missouri State Medical Association.
