Program Director's Welcome
Welcome to the Med-Peds residency program at the University of Missouri. I hope you enjoy your visit to our home on the web. Our intention is to give you a peek into world of Med-Peds at MU. From the biographies of our residents to the descriptions of our rotations, please feel free to take a tour through our site. Allow me give you an overview of our program:
As written in our mission statement, our goal is to train excellent Med-Peds physicians who are prepared to enter any of the various career paths available to Med-Peds graduates. Our graduates have entered all of the various careers commonly associated with Med-Peds physicians – primary care, hospitalist, ER/urgent care, and fellowship. We have placed several graduates in academic settings and others in private practices.
Our program has always emphasized service and advocacy, and as a result our residents have achieved much and grown both personally and professionally. Community service has been encouraged over the last several years, and our residents have volunteered many hours to the service of others. Starting with a community health screening drive for underserved children, health-related lectures to school groups, working at a children’s diabetes camp, and serving on the Boards of health-related non-profit organizations in Columbia, our residents have demonstrated the true spirit of community altruism through the donation of their time.
As a result of their efforts, our residents have achieved great things. Many of our residents have been involved in MU house staff governance, with six serving as house staff president. One of our residents has received grant money from the AAP to launch a community health screening program for the underserved population in Columbia. Another MU Med-Peds resident received the Tunnessen Award in 2006 as the outstanding Med-Peds resident in the country as named by the Med-Peds Program Directors Association.
One last aspect of the Med-Peds program at MU that I wanted to mention is community – both within the residency program and in Columbia. The residency is small but the residents are a tight-knit group who enjoy meeting with one another, either during the course of a work day, during one of our conferences, or at one of the many social gatherings we have throughout the year. All of the residents feel a part of our community whether they have lived in Columbia all of their lives or are new to the area. Columbia also is a welcoming community. It is still a college town with a friendly, vibrant atmosphere and a burgeoning downtown shopping and entertainment district. At the same time, it is a wonderful place to raise a family - with little traffic, crime, or pollution. So consider Columbia as your destination for Med-Peds – you’ll always be welcome.
I hope you have gained a meaningful look into the Med-Peds residency program at the University of Missouri. Whether you are applying for a Med-Peds residency or you are just curious about Med-Peds, please feel free to contact us for more information about Med-Peds at MU.
