Recognizing the Generosity of Alumni and Friends
Each year alumni, grateful patients, faculty, staff and friends share their financial resources by contributing to the University of Missouri School of Medicine and University of Missouri Health Care. These benefactors often designate their gifts for specific uses, including scholarships, research, program support and patient care. However, many gifts are unrestricted and can be directed to the areas of greatest need.
Dr. Andrew McAlester symbolizes the vision and energy that have shaped medicine at the University of Missouri into a model for academic health centers. A major force in establishing the first public medical school west of the Mississippi River, Dr. McAlester is appropriately honored as the "father" of MU's School of Medicine. During his tenure as the school's dean from 1883 to 1909, he set a standard for commitment and excellence that continues to inspire the generations of students, clinicians and scientists who walk in his footsteps.
Recognizing the importance of private supportEstablished in 1988 by the Medical School Foundation, the McAlester Society recognizes alumni and friends who hold a close, long-term interest in medical education, research and care at the University of Missouri. Regardless of how contributions are designated, the McAlester Society acknowledges its donors for the important role they play in the future of MU's academic health center.
