Students pursuing the MD and PhD degrees must be admitted to both the School of Medicine and the Graduate School and should be registered concurrently. Applicants interested in completing both degrees should apply through AMCAS and the usual medical school admissions process, and indicate their interest in research. Typically, students fulfill the preclinical training of their medical education, then focus upon their graduate degree and then complete the clinical portion of their medical education. Their registration changes from being primary in the SOM to primary in the Graduate School and then back to primary in the SOM during these respective periods.

A plan of study for the graduate degree should be developed by the student and mentor and must be approved by the director of graduate studies, the Sr. Associate Dean for Research, the Associate Dean for Student Programs and the Graduate school. This plan may include up to 30 hours of credit for SOM courses taken during the preclinical portion of the MD degree program (Biochemistry 6 hrs, Microbiology 4 hrs, Immunology 3 hrs, Pharmacology 4 hours, Physiology 4 hrs, Pathology 6 hrs, and Neurosciences, 3 hrs).

Students concurrently registered in the SOM and the Graduate School may participate in approved educational offerings of either School, at any time during their education. Financial aid is available from private gifts, training grants and fellowships, including awards from the School of Medicine, Graduate School and the Life Sciences Fellowship Program.

Other opportunities for medical students to participate in research are available; they may be as brief as a single summer research fellowship. Further information may be obtained from the Senior Associate Dean for Research.
