MU Researchers Receive International Recognition in Abstract Competition

Discoveries were featured during meeting of the Association for Research in Vision Ophthalmology

Three researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine working in the laboratory of Rajiv R. Mohan, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology, have been recognized at the international level for discoveries involving corneal wound healing, gene therapy and nanomedicine.

The following MU researchers were selected from more than 1,600 applicants to receive travel grant awards to present their findings at the 2010 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Annual Meeting Meeting from May 2 to May 6, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla:

  • Vanessa Lopez, MD, clinical instructor and cornea fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, has been awarded a National Eye Institute Travel Grant for her research on corneal scarring and wound healing.
  • David Phillips, a second-year student in the MU School of Medicine, has been awarded a National Eye Institute Travel Grant for his research on corneal gene therapy.
  • Jonathan Tovey, MD, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, has received an ARVO Travel Grant for his research on nanomedicine.

"This meeting is the most prestigious eye research meeting in the nation. It is a great honor to have three research abstracts from my lab selected for representation," Mohan said.

The ARVO Travel Grant Program provides partial travel support to investigators who demonstrate potential for future significant research accomplishments and whose research findings selected to be presented at the ARVO Annual Meeting are considered to be of high interest to the vision and ophthalmology community. The MU recipients will each receive a $750 stipend and a registration fee waiver.

ARVO has more than 12,500 members throughout the world. For more information, visit:
