MU Professor Recognized for Leadership in Medical EducationElizabeth Garrett strives to improve health care by advancing family medicine teaching
Garrett currently serves at the secretary to the society's foundation. Over a span of 20 years, she has held numerous important roles in the society. Among these, Garrett has served as the society's president, as co-chair of the society's group on medical student education, as member-at-large of the board of directors, and as the society's representative to the Association of American Medical College's Council on Academic Societies. In addition, she has been involved in the development of the society's preceptor education projects – initiatives that help practicing physicians better teach students in their offices. Garrett attended MU's School of Medicine and completed her residency training in the MU Department of Family and Community Medicine. After three years as a faculty member at Dartmouth College Medical School in Hanover, N.H., Garrett returned to MU to enroll in the Robert Wood Johnson Academic Fellowship Program. In 1988, she earned her master's degree in public health and joined MU's faculty. Garrett currently serves as the department's director of medical student education, which includes her leadership of the family medicine clerkship and the ambulatory clinical experience for the medical school. In addition to teaching and administrative duties, Garrett sees patients at Green Meadows Family Medicine Clinic. |
