MU Researchers Named to American Heart Association Editorial Board

Cardiovascular biology journal will seek scientists' expertise to review peer research

Two University of Missouri School of Medicine faculty members have been appointed members of the editorial board of Circulation Research, the official journal of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the American Heart Association. Cuihua Zhang, MD, PhD, associate professor of internal medicine, medical pharmacology and physiology, and nutritional sciences, and Ronald Korthuis, PhD, chair of the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology, were selected based on their individual scientific expertise, intellectual integrity and recognized stature in their field.

"It is a highly regarded publication in the area of cardiovascular biology in terms of impact," Korthuis said. "The appointments are quite an honor, and with that comes a significant responsibility. It's an opportunity for MU to have an important impact on the research agenda of the journal."

Korthuis and Zhang will be called on to review manuscripts and articles, as well as provide suggestions regarding the content, operations and strategic direction of the journal.

Circulation Research serves as a forum for fundamental, mechanistic research of relevance to the cardiovascular system from various disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics, pathology, physiology and pharmacology.

Zhang received her medical degree in 1985 from Jin Zhou Medical College in Lioaning, China, and earned her doctorate in 1995 from Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China. After completing two consecutive research fellowships in 1998 with the Department of Physiology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zhang joined the Department of Medical Physiology at Texas A & M University as a research scientist. She continued her research as an assistant professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Surgery and Physiology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans. Before joining MU in 2008, she served as an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology at Texas A & M University. She is an ad hoc member of NIH Center for Scientific Review study sections on hypertension and microcirculation, as well as myocardial ischemia and metabolism. She is also an editorial board member for American Journal of Physiology, Basic Research in Cardiology, Frontiers in Vascular Physiology, and World Journal of Cardiology.

Korthuis is the George L. and Melna A. Bolm Distinguished Professor in Cardiovascular Health. He received his doctorate in physiology from Michigan State University in 1983. Before joining MU in 2004, he served as professor and vice chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. He is a member of the Vascular Cell and Molecular Biology study section of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, serves as an associate editor for Frontiers in Vascular Physiology and as an editorial board member of the American Journal of Physiology and the Cardiovascular Research journal. He is a fellow of the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society and the Council on Basic Sciences of the American Heart Association. He is also a 2007 recipient of the University of Missouri Gold Chalk Award for Dedication and Service to the Advancement of Graduate Student Education.
