MU Department of Medicine Chair to Lead Largest Medical Speciality Group

Fleming elected president of American College of Physicians

David Fleming, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, has been elected 2014-2015 president of the American College of Physicians, the nation’s largest medical specialty organization.

Fleming, who also serves as professor of medicine and director of the MU Center for Health Ethics, will begin his term in mid-April.

Members of the American College of Physicians include more than 137,000 internal medicine physicians, related subspecialists and medical students. Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.

Board-certified in internal medicine, Fleming earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and his medical degree from the MU School of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency training in the Department of Medicine at the MU School of Medicine.

Fleming has been a member of the American College of Physicians since 1980, and he has been a Fellow of the College (FACP) since 1986. FACP is an honorary designation that recognizes ongoing individual service and contributions to the practice of medicine.

Fleming has received numerous awards for teaching and service, including the Distinguished Service Award of the MU Alumni Association, the Jane Hickman Teaching Award, the Robert N. McCallum Student Advocacy Award, and Faculty Member of the Year in the Department of Health Management and Informatics at the MU School of Medicine. Additionally, he was named Prince Charitable Scholar in End of Life Care at Georgetown University in 2000 and Service Excellence Hero in 2009 from University Hospital at the University of Missouri.

He is the author or co-author of more than 60 peer-reviewed journal publications and book chapters. He is also editor and author of the book, “Care of the Dying Patient.”
