MU Family Medicine Program Receives National Award

AAFP recognizes program for second year in a row

The University of Missouri School of Medicine's success in educating family medicine physicians has been recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians for the second year in a row.

The academy recently awarded the MU School of Medicine a Top 10 Award for its family and community medicine program.

Steven Zweig, PhD

Each year, the academy honors medical schools that have graduated the greatest percentage of students who choose first-year family medicine residency positions. The MU School of Medicine ranked fourth in the nation in numbers of graduates choosing family medicine during the years 2011 to 2013.

"This award recognizes our commitment to meeting the nation's needs for family physicians," said Steve Zweig, MD, chair of the MU Department of Family and Community Medicine, Paul Revare Family Endowed Professor in Family Medicine and director of the MU Interdisciplinary Center on Aging. "Family physicians are personal doctors for people of all ages, providing preventive and complex care at all stages of life. We help manage illness and coordinate care to meet each person's health goals."

The MU School of Medicine has educated Missouri physicians for over 165 years. With more than 4,200 physician alumni in Missouri, more of the state's physicians received their medical degrees from MU than from any other university.

The MU School of Medicine is ranked eighth in the nation for the specialty of family medicine by U.S. News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools, 2015 Edition. The school's Department of Family and Community Medicine has been ranked in the top 10 for 21 consecutive years.
