Fraunfelder Joins MU School of Medicine as Chair of Ophthalmology


Fraunfelder specializes in corneal disease, cancers of the eye and laser surgery

Frederick Fraunfelder, MD, has joined the University of Missouri School of Medicine as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. Fraunfelder comes to MU from the Casey Eye Institute and Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, where he served as a professor of ophthalmology and as the chief of the cornea, external disease and refractive surgery division.

Fraunfelder received his medical degree from OHSU. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Washington Medical Center and a fellowship in corneal disease at OHSU. He also received a master of business administration degree in health care management from OHSU.

In addition to his expertise in corneal disease, ocular oncology and laser surgery, Fraunfelder is a nationally recognized expert in the ocular side effects of drugs. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and has written four books and more than 30 book chapters. Many of these publications concern ocular toxicology.

Fraunfelder serves as the Roy E. Mason and Elizabeth Patee Mason Distinguished Professor and chair of the Mason Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology. Fraunfelder succeeds Dean Hainsworth, MD, who served as interim chair of the Department of Ophthalmology since September 2013.
