Gala To Celebrate Five Decades Of Dermatology At MU

Dermatology residency program began in 1963

The University of Missouri School of Medicine will celebrate 50 years of dermatologic education and services at MU with a gala on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the MU Reynolds Alumni Center.

Hosted by the Department of Dermatology, the celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with brunch, followed by tours of the University of Missouri and the MU School of Medicine. The gala will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in the last 50 years, and this gala is a time to pause and look back,” said Karen Edison, MD, chair of the Department of Dermatology. “The scope of our specialty has changed with the advent of new pharmaceutical advancements, an increasing surgical component, as well as telemedicine to reach rural, underserved areas. This gala is also a time to look to the future and think about where we want to go moving forward.”

Dermatology at MU began in 1960 as a division in the MU School of Medicine under the leadership of Norman Asel, MD. The MU dermatology residency program began in 1963 under Philip C. Anderson, MD, and has since trained more than 120 resident physicians. In 2003, the division became a department. More than 100 former medical students, resident physicians and faculty members are expected to attend the celebration.
