Professor Recognized as International Leader in Microcirculation Research

Vascular health expert recently received prestigious Kitanomaru Award in Japan

Gerald Meininger, PhD, Margaret Proctor Mulligan Distinguished Professor in Medical Research and professor in the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, received the Kitanomaru Award at the 10th World Congress for Microcirculation recently held in Kyoto, Japan. The Kitanomaru Award is presented to outstanding leaders in the field of microcirculation research.

The World Congress for Microcirculation meeting is held every four years with representatives from microcirculatory societies around the world. Microcirculation research examines how blood circulates from the heart to the body's arteries, capillaries and veins.

"We have spent many years developing an understanding of how blood vessels sense and respond to mechanical or physical forces," Meininger said. "It is clear that many of the mechanisms that cells and blood vessels use change during aging and in vascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis. The changes in these mechanisms exhibit a certain commonality across diseases, suggesting an important role of aging and disease-related events related to the cardiovascular system."

Meininger, who also serves as resident investigator and former director of the MU Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, said his future research plans are to continue to investigate questions important to understanding vascular health and how to maintain it.

Meininger believes that a better understanding of what causes blood vessels to change as people get older or why they experience vascular diseases will lead to the development of new strategies for treatment and prevention.

"It is humbling to be recognized by the world community of microcirculation scientists," Meininger said. "Over the years, the tremendous number of colleagues you meet adds to a growing list of friends both national and international. It is a great pleasure to meet and interact with my international colleagues."

Meininger joined MU in 2005 as director of the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center. He is the past president of the Microcirculatory Society, co-editor of the Journal of Vascular Research and editor-in-chief of Frontiers in Vascular Physiology.
