MU School of Medicine Program Expands to Other Medical Schools

MU’s Legacy Teachers program lets students recognize patients as educators

An original University of Missouri program now is being adopted by other medical schools across the country. The MU School of Medicine’s Legacy Teachers™ program lets students recognize patients and their families who made significant impressions on their future careers as physicians. The program, which was created 11 years ago, has expanded to other medical schools including the University of Kansas-Wichita, the University of North Carolina and Tufts University.

“We are delighted to see the Legacy Teachers program being adopted at other medical schools,” said Betsy Garrett, MD, William C. Allen Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and the Legacy Teachers program’s foremost champion and organizer at the MU School of Medicine. “Gratitude is such an important trait for physicians to have and express. It is important we give students the opportunity to thank patients who are among their best and most memorable teachers. We truly believe that this program, which we are proud to say is an MU original, could and should occur at every medical school in the country.”

Legacy Teachers

The Legacy Teachers program, which culminates with a luncheon each year at the MU Reynolds Alumni Center, invites third-year medical students to submit essays, artwork or poetry describing the patient they recognized as one of their greatest teachers. At the 11th annual Legacy Teachers luncheon, 38 third-year students honored 26 of these special teachers.

With the program well established at MU, representatives from other medical schools across the country have begun visiting MU to join MU faculty, staff, students, patients and their families at the luncheon to experience the event. Following the luncheon, representatives meet with MU’s organizers to discuss implementing the Legacy Teachers program at their own medical schools. This year, representatives from the University of South Dakota, Texas Tech University - El Paso, Dartmouth, the University of Kansas-Wichita and the University of Maryland attended the luncheon.

“Meeting with other medical schools and hearing their ideas helps us all consider ways to continue to expand this amazing program,” Garrett said. “This also allows them to see firsthand all the work that is done behind the scenes to pull off such a great event.”

Garrett said she is excited to spread the word about Legacy Teachers, and hopes that one day patients will be celebrated as the tremendous teachers they are in every medical school in the country.
