MU School of Medicine Awards 86 Medical Degrees at Commencement Ceremony

The graduates will go on to receive additional training as resident physicians in their chosen specialties

The University of Missouri School of Medicine celebrated the graduation of 86 medical students in the class of 2016 on May 14, in Jesse Auditorium.

This year’s commencement speaker was William Salzer, MD, professor of medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at MU. Salzer currently serves as fellowship program director and division director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at MU and is a member of the Education Committee in the Department of Internal Medicine. In addition, Salzer is the medical director of the Missouri Regional AIDS Interfaith Network, an organization that focuses on providing care to central Missourians living with HIV and AIDS.

The class of 2016 had a 100 percent residency program match rate, meaning many hospitals and health systems chose MU medical school graduates as their top resident physician candidates. At 100 percent, the number of MU School of Medicine graduates matched with residencies is above the national average match rate of approximately 94 percent. The MU School of Medicine filled all of its residency positions in the match.

After receiving their medical degrees, these physicians will go on to receive additional training in their chosen specialties. Many of the physicians – 30 percent of MU School of Medicine’s class of 2016 – will stay on the MU campus for their residency training. Forty percent of the MU School of Medicine 2016 class will remain in Missouri, and 42 percent of this graduating class selected residency programs in high-need primary care fields, including internal medicine, pediatrics and family medicine.

Graduates of MU School of Medicine consistently score higher than the national average on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). MU School of Medicine graduates are trained, evaluated and expected to be competent in their ability to deliver patient-centered care, including their capability to communicate with the patient, family members and colleagues working as part of an interdisciplinary team.

More Missouri physicians received their medical degrees from MU than from any other university. The MU School of Medicine has improved health, education and research in Missouri and beyond for more than 165 years. MU School of Medicine graduates treat patients from every county in the state.
