University Eye Institute East
Grand Opening
University Eye Institute East recently held its grand opening at 3215 Wingate
Court near MU’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
The 7,900 square foot center is roughly three times the size of the previous facility located on Portland Ave. The nearby University Optical East gives patients convenient access to prescription frames, contacts and other vision products.
A special section of the institute is dedicated to children’s eye care. With the help of TJ, the tiger mascot for the Children’s Hospital, the institute hopes to ease the pressure and anxiety that children often feel when getting an eye examination and strives to provide a positive experience for younger patients.
Innovative Technology
The University Eye Institute East houses several cutting edge pieces of technology, including one of the most advanced optical coherence tomography systems in the United States.
Developed in 1992 and continually refined to its present state, optical coherence tomography provides the technology necessary for clinicians to offer safe and affordable transpupillary imaging services to patients. OCT is able to create images of internal retinal structures with a precise resolution, typically between 10 and 17 microns. This gives an ophthalmologist the opportunity to measure retinal thickness and observe any irregularities, including the notoriously elusive warning symptoms of glaucoma, with a simple, noninvasive procedure.
