Total Hip Replacement
Dr Bal's practice is to use the anterior approach to minimize the trauma of hip replacement surgery. This is the favored approach for the following reasons:
- Shorter skin incision
- No muscles or tendons are cut, but rather spread apart
- Hip socket does not need to be dislocated during surgery
You can also download a printable version of the information contained in these animations here. (Requires free Adoble Reader.
Total Knee Replacement
Dr Bal's practice is to use the muscle-sparing approach to minimize the trauma of knee replacement surgery. This is the favored approach for the following reasons:
- No tourniquet is used, leaving the blood supply intact
- Shorter skin incision
- Quadriceps muscles are spared, not cut
- Kneecap is retracted as little as necessary
You can also download a printable version of the information contained in these animations here. (Requires free Adoble Reader.
