Residency and Fellowship

Welcome and thank you for visiting the University of Missouri Department of Psychiatry Residency Training Program. The University of Missouri Psychiatry Residency Training Program is a fully accredited four-year residency with available fellowships in Child and Adolescent, and Forensic Psychiatry. We provide excellent clinical training on inpatient, outpatient, emergency, consultation-liaison, addictions, geriatrics, and child and adolescent services, as well as in a variety of specialized and elective settings.

Here at the University of Missouri, we offer a balanced program with Psychotherapy and biological aspects of Psychiatry both emphasized from early on in training. Our residents develop a wide range of clinical skills which enable them to practice effective psychiatry in a wide range of settings. Clinical experience is gained at the University Hospital, Missouri Psychiatric Center, Harry S. Truman VA Hospital, Fulton State Hospital, University of Missouri outpatient psychiatry and a variety of community psychiatry rotations. Excellent supervision and didactics are provided throughout the training years and clinical experiences.

The greatest strength of our Department is our commitment to a quality environment in which our residents can flourish. Residents are actively involved in residency training issues and decisions. We constantly evaluate their input and work to continually improve our program. We have a broad range of faculty and teach in a highly supportive environment. Because of the diverse interests of our faculty and the many areas of strength within the department, we are interested in and attract residents with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. Our goal is to nurture the specific interests of each resident and help them reach their ultimate goals and potential in whatever way possible. Whether it be research, clinical subspecialty, fellowships, education or other interests, we strive to make these dreams a reality for our residents.

Please feel free to contact us with any further inquiries about our Psychiatry Residency Training Program!

Sincerely,

Andrew G. Resnik, MD
Psychiatry Residency Training Director

Philosophy of the Program

The Psychiatry Resident Program at the University of Missouri provides a four-year program of training in General Psychiatry of which one year may be integrated with a two-year child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program. During the program, residents gain experience in a variety of clinical settings with a diverse patient population. Residents are taught psychopharmacology as well as psychotherapy to treat their patients.

The residency program combines a highly structured didactic program with comprehensive clinical and research experience. There is continuous one on one contact among residents and attending physicians. The Program Director meets monthly with the residents in an open session to discuss training and residency needs. The program is designed to foster the development of well rounded competent general psychiatrists.

Residents rotate at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, University of Missouri Psychiatric Center, University Hospital, University Physicians Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, as well as in psychiatry outreach placements throughout the Columbia area. Each resident is also provided with the opportunity for elective time.

Summary of the Training Program

The psychiatry residency offers a four-year, fully accredited training program. The program includes clinical rotations as follows:

  • PGY 1: Clinical rotations in the first year include inpatient psychiatry, internal medicine/child health, child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and emergency psychiatry. Residents may also be assigned to neurology in the first year.

  • PGY 2: Clinical rotations in the second year include inpatient psychiatry, consultation liaison psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, neurology, and emergency psychiatry. Additional rotations in addiction, geriatric, and child psychiatry may be assigned.

  • PGY 3: Most residents will complete their 12-month outpatient year during their third year. Residents assigned to outpatient will also complete a one-half day per week community placement assignment. Residents in the third year also experience a full week of administering electroconvulsive therapy at St. Louis University.

  • PGY 4: Residents in their fourth year will complete remaining requirements for program completion and also complete elective experiences. Residents may also choose to transfer into a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship in their fourth year.

The 2010-2011 training stipend for first year residents in psychiatry (PGY I) is $46,478. In addition, residents are offered a comprehensive benefit package.

Selection and Appointment

Selection and appointment of residents to the residency program is in accordance with the procedures defined by the institutional Policy on Selection and Appointment of House Officers. All applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) for review. Applications will be screened by the Education Committee and selected applicants will be asked to come for an interview. Candidates are interviewed by the Resident Selection Committee which is composed of representative department faculty along with the Program Director, Chair, and Chief Resident. The program seeks to accept candidates who have a solid academic foundation and genuine interest in pursuing psychiatry training.

General Residency Application Process

The University of Missouri offers a fully accredited residency program in general psychiatry to qualified physicians. University Hospital, Missouri Psychiatric Center and Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital provide facilities for academic and clinical training in all requisite phases of psychiatry.

The Psychiatry Residency offers six first year positions. The program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Psychiatry Match and will complete interviews prior to the deadline for submission of the rank order list.

Application Process

Interested applicants can apply to the program, through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) system as we do not accept paper applications. In addition to the ERAS application, the general application requirements are as follows:

  1. Current curriculum vitae
  2. 3 letters of recommendation – written within the past 12 months. Letters that have been written before September 1, 2010 will not be accepted (except for Dean's Letters).
  3. Dean's letters are submitted separately.
  4. USMLE or COMLEX-- Steps 1 and II are required for entry into the program and should be completed prior to the Match.
  5. Submission of USMLE transcripts is required.
  6. Application Deadline: Our deadline for applications is December 1; however, we will close applications once we have filled our interview schedule.
  7. Medical School Graduation:> Applicants who graduated from medical school five years ago or more must currently be working as a physician or be in a residency or fellowship program either in the United States or an international program. Applicants engaged in externship, observership, or volunteer research programs, and who graduated from medical school experience more than five years ago do not meet this requirement.
  8. Experience: Experience in the specialty is desirable as is some experience in the United States. We will accept experience in clinical research, externships and observerships in psychiatry. We do not offer externships or externship, observerships, and we do not have volunteer research experience available at this time in our program. Applications without U.S. experience will be accepted by recent medical school graduates (those graduating within the past two years) and from candidates who have received residency training in psychiatry in international programs.
  9. Scores: We prefer passing scores of 80 or above, and we generally do not accept more than three attempts on any of the step examinations. However, scores are one component of the application and may be influenced by number of attempts on an examination and the clinical experiences of the applicant.
  10. Visas: We sponsor both H1-B and J-1 visas. However, it is our policy that anyone who wishes to enter training on an H1-B visa pass the Step 3 examination before we submission of our Match rank order list, or be willing to enter the program on a J1 visa. We have the right to limit the number of H1-B visas we will offer each year.

Selection of Candidates, Interview Schedule and Wait List

The Program Coordinator reviews all applications for completeness and for those that meet our criteria, and those are submitted for review and selection by our Selection Committee. Selected interviews are conducted in November, December, and January, and all interviews must be scheduled. The program will provide out-of-town candidates with a hotel accommodation the evening before the interview, and each candidate will receive a packet that includes an overview of the educational program, contractual and administrative policies of the program, and interviewer biographical information. This information will be reviewed with the candidate during the interview day by the program coordinator and program director.

  1. Each candidate is formally interviewed, one-on-one, with representative faculty and the Chief Resident.
  2. Candidates will attend a lunch with current residents where they can talk informally. No faculty members are present at the lunch.
  3. Each interviewer completes an evaluation of the candidates he or she interviewed. The evaluation form is returned to the coordinator and becomes a part of the application file.
  4. The files of all candidates who have been interviewed are reviewed and discussed during a designated Resident Selection Committee Meeting.
  5. Notification of Successful Applicants - All interviewed candidates are reviewed by the Resident Selection Committee to complete the rank order list that is submitted to the NRMP. Successful applicants will be notified by Match results, followed by a letter from the program.

Please direct any questions to the program coordinator.

Child Fellowship

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program of the University of Missouri has been in continuous operation since 1967. As a fully accredited two-year program, we graduate up to three child and adolescent psychiatrists each year. The number of fellows has been limited to a program complement of six in order to provide personalized supervision and to facilitate an atmosphere in which each fellow is considered a respected contributor.

A Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist must have a thorough understanding of the development and prevention of psychopathology as it appears from infancy through adulthood. He or she should also have the skills to serve as an effective consultant to primary care physicians, community agencies and institutions serving children and adolescents. To this end, the program has always emphasized individual instruction and supervision and has maintained a cohesive approach in which faculty and fellows share clinical responsibilities and learn from the exchange of ideas.

The diagnostic and treatment approach to patients follows the integrated psycho-social-biological philosophy that views mental illness as a multi-etiological problem that can benefit from a spectrum of treatments. Our faculty members form an eclectic group representing psychiatry, psychology and social services.

The goal of the child psychiatry training program is to produce competent and caring physicians who feel comfortable whether in a clinical office, with families, in juvenile courts, addressing a professional group, writing ideas, or working with an inpatient team. Fellows will grow in their knowledge of pharmacotherapy, dynamic psychotherapy, family therapy, and behavioral management approaches. They will also learn to critically evaluate journal articles and to formulate their own research ideas and methods. Knowledge of record keeping, time utilization, and quality assurance is stressed to promote skills which are needed in today's professional market.

An integral part of the child psychiatry program in the didactic program it provides. Fellows devote one day a week to attend child seminars, case conferences, book reviews, parenting seminars and grand rounds.

Fellows in the child psychiatry program spend a year rotating in the inpatient child/adolescent psychiatry units of Missouri Psychiatric Center and Royal Oaks Hospital. The second year of the fellowship is spent in the outpatient child/adolescent psychiatry clinical setting. Fellows see patients in the general child/adolescent psychiatry clinic, the ADHD clinic, the Autism Clinic and also see children and adolescents with forensic psychiatry needs.
