Acute Care Surgery

Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program in the Division of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Missouri offers an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved one-year program leading to board certification in critical care. As a supplement to the one-year program, the division offers a two-year program that fulfills the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma guidelines for acute care surgery.

The fellow will work closely with faculty as a part of the surgical critical care team at University Hospital, consisting of five designated board-certified surgeons, surgical residents, medical students, physician assistants and nurse clinicians. Surgical coverage will be within the 18-bed SICU unit, with most admissions coming from general surgery, vascular surgery, urology, plastic surgery or otolaryngology.

University Hospital is an American College of Surgeons verified Level I trauma center, one of only three such centers in Missouri. The Frank L. Mitchell, Jr., MD Trauma Center is recognized as meeting and exceeding the highest standards of care for the most critically injured patients. As the only burn center in the region, MU is also a leader in the treatment of burn-injured patients, maintaining a 14-bed dedicated Burn ICU.

The University of Missouri Health Care System fully supports the medical and educational mission of the SICU to provide high quality care to our patients and exceptional, essential learning opportunities. The Department of Surgery's Division of Acute care Surgery reflects the current model of combining the disciplines of trauma, burn, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery. A multidisciplinary team provides patient care, outreach education, and medical student and resident training, including ACGME-approved fellowship positions in surgical critical care and burn. Faculty members are also active in both clinical and basic science research.
