The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Psychiatry Fellowship offers two intensive training programs for Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners: a 12-month Adult Psychiatry fellowship and an 18-month Child/Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. The program accepts three fellows each year.
Fellows train across a range of clinical settings with a diverse patient population, supported by a structured didactic curriculum. Training covers psychiatric pathology and etiology, psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic formulation, psychopharmacology, psychotherapeutic treatment across the lifespan, medicolegal and ethical principles, electronic medical record proficiency, and patient management. The core curriculum combines clinical assignments, seminars, and individual supervision.
The fellowship is housed in the University of Missouri School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, where fellows are supervised and taught by faculty physicians and experienced psychiatric APPs. Formal professional development and mentorship with seasoned clinicians are built into the program, and fellows train alongside resident physicians as well as their APP fellow cohort in a structure modeled closely on a psychiatric residency.
Graduates leave with the training, experience, and confidence to deliver a broad range of psychiatric services in virtually any clinical setting, and to serve as clinicians, educators, and leaders in clinical and academic psychiatry.

Entry Requirements and Application
- Graduate from an accredited physician assistant or PMHNP program before start date
- Pass the applicable national certification exam before start date

Application Deadline
- Applications must be submitted by December 31st of the calendar year prior to the next July 1st Program Start Date (e.g. For Program Start Date July 1, 2025, application deadline is December 31, 2024).
- If selected for an interview, applicants will be notified in January to schedule an interview in February.
Program Start Date
The program start date for the general psychiatry fellowship is generally July 1; start dates can vary based on licensure and credentialing. Applications are accepted year round and interview scheduling begins four months prior to respective fellowship start dates.
