2020 – Mangalore, India
In February 2020, Dr. Tyler Ellis (PGY-3 resident) and Dr. Sumit Gupta (pediatric orthopaedic surgeon) traveled to Mangalore, India. This is the second year in a row Mizzou has participated in the Bal Shalyakriya (Surgery for Children) Mission Week at KMC Hospital-Attavar.

1988 – Transkei, South Africa
Dr. Jeffrey Anglen was a Mizzou faculty member from 1992 to 2004. Before his time at MU, he traveled to Transkei, South Africa as part of the Orthopaedics Overseas organization. He spent six weeks with the only trained and certified orthopaedic surgeon for the 3.5 million inhabitants of Transkei and treated conditions he had not seen in his residency, including tuberculosis of the joints and spine, leprosy, untreated polio, and neglected fractures and infections. He describes that “every day was a learning experience. It was fascinating, invigorating, stimulating, and humbling. I loved it.”
2019 – Mangalore, India
In February 2019, Dr. Benjamin Burch (resident), Kelly Scott, RN, and Dr. Sumit Gupta (pediatric orthopaedic surgeon) traveled to Mangalore, India and saw patients in clinic and on the ward at KMC Hospital. The team rounded with residents, performed nine surgeries, and gave a lecture.
