Lakshmi Pulakat, M.Phil, PhD


The core focus of Dr. Pulakat’s research is the elucidation and manipulation of various biological pathways that contribute to the development and pathogenesis of cardio-metabolic disease. Dr. Pulakat is involved in various projects focused on developing technologies and devices to enable better delivery of drugs for both research and clinical purposes. Her research has evolved over the past decade from utilizing classic molecular biology and biotechnology methods in basic science research to working on highly translational research focused on validation and testing of new therapeutics and devices as well as identifying key therapeutic targets. Her current research includes extensive collaboration with small business interests (primarily Novopyxis Inc, and Droplette Inc., both Boston-based biotechnology companies) and clinicians at Tufts Medical Center and UM-Columbia. Dr. Pulakat’s NIH-funded research is focused on characterizing a new cardiomyopathy drug to treat diabetes- and chemotherapy-induced cardiovascular toxicity, and identifying sex differences in development of these pathologies and the drug responses. Dr. Pulakat is also involved in the development of a new treatment for chronic wounds such as venous stasis, diabetic ulcers and pressure ulcers using a transdermal delivery system capable of delivering gene and protein therapy to expedite wound healing.
