Based on his innovative work at MU, Dr. Jimi Cook was inducted into the Mizzou Chapter of NAI. Dr. Cook’s 16 patents are focused in the area of biomedical devices and methods in orthopaedics. His patents have resulted in licenses for clinical application in veterinary and human medicine, improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of animals and people.
He has also invented numerous surgical procedures in the areas of ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament knee reconstruction, meniscal repair and replacement, and allograft transplantation that have been adopted clinically without formal patents. Licensors of his technology are global leaders in orthopaedics including Arthrex, Arthrex Vet Systems, and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Cook said, “It is a great honor for me to be selected as a Fellow in the Mizzou Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. I feel so blessed to be in such a creative and supportive environment in the School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedics that so strongly fosters innovation. I think the University of Missouri is unique in the way it encourages and promotes the inventive spirit and provides resources and mechanisms to bring ideas to fruition. I don’t know of another university that provides for this creativity and productivity. I want to sincerely thank the leadership of the Mizzou Chapter of the NAI for accepting my nomination, my chairman Dr. Jim Stannard and my colleague Dr. Keiichi Kuroki for nominating and supporting me, Dr. Sam Bish in the Office of Technology Management and Industry Relations for his hard work and guidance on our behalf, The Missouri Coulter Biomedical Accelerator Foundation Program for funding and training, and all of my amazing colleagues and dear friends in the Comparative Orthopaedic Lab, The Thompson Laboratory for Regenerative Orthopaedics, The Mizzou BioJoint Center and The Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, as well as my wife Cristi and my grandparents, mother, and sisters for daring to explore big ideas and dreams with me that have led to innovations in orthopaedic healthcare. This is definitely a team honor and not an individual honor, and I am humbled to accept it on behalf of the amazing team that I am blessed to be a part of. I am most proud of the fact that our inventions have helped improve the lives of patients. Thank you for this wonderful honor.”
