Jacob Markowitz was a pioneer in the field of experimental surgery. Dr. Markowitz was chief of experimental surgery and a professor of physiology at the University of Toronto who changed the course of experimental surgery and heart transplantation. The Academy of Surgical Research established this award in 1986 to honor Dr. Markowitz’ legacy by recognizing other pioneers in experimental surgery who have followed in his footsteps. In his keynote address at the award presentation, Dr. Cook said, “I am humbled and honored to accept this award on behalf of the amazing colleagues and collaborators that I have worked with over the years. This is not an individual award, this is a team award, and I am blessed to work with the best team in the whole world!”
