MU Surgeon Named to Orthopaedic Association

Matthew Smith, MD

Matthew Smith, MD, outpatient medical director of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the MU School of Medicine, has been appointed an associate member of the Society of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).

ASES is an educational body of leading national and international orthopaedic surgeons specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery. It is responsible for the development of scientific programs, organization of current knowledge, standardization of nomenclature and the publication of scientific materials. Members discuss best practices, present research and serve on the review board for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Vernon Luck Sr. Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the MU School of Medicine. “We are very fortunate that Dr. Smith is a part of our highly specialized team of orthopaedic surgeons at MU Health.”

Smith is a 2001 graduate of Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine where he received the Litton Award for Excellence. He completed a one-year fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Smith is the only surgeon in mid-Missouri who has completed an accredited fellowship for shoulder and elbow surgery.
