School of Medicine awards 111 degrees at Spring ’25 Commencement

2025 Commencement

The University of Missouri School of Medicine will celebrate the graduation of 111 medical students in the class of 2025 on Saturday, May 17, inside Jesse Auditorium.

This year’s graduating class included 25 graduates who trained at the school’s Springfield Clinical Campus in southwest Missouri. The Springfield Clinical Campus is a public/private partnership with Mizzou and CoxHealth and Mercy hospitals.

Lauren Umstattd, MD, was selected by this year’s graduating class to serve as commencement speaker. Umstattd, a facial plastic surgeon at FACE Leawood in Kansas, earned two degrees from Mizzou. She earned her medical degree in 2015 and Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology in 2011. Dr. Umstattd later completed her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at MU Health Care from 2015-20.

The Class of 2025 highly sought after: 99% of the class received a residency program match, meaning many hospitals and health systems chose graduating Mizzou medical students as their top resident physician candidates.

After receiving their medical degrees, these physicians will go on to receive additional training in their chosen specialties. Many of the physicians – 31% – will remain on the MU campus for their residency training. 46% of this year’s graduates will remain in Missouri, and 32% selected residency programs in primary care fields.

The 2025 class also featured 20 graduates from the School of Medicine’s Rural Scholars Program and Lester Bryant Scholars Pre-Admissions Program. Celebrating their 30th anniversary, the two programs were launched in 1995 to address the growing shortage of primary health care physicians in rural Missouri.

Graduates of the MU School of Medicine consistently score higher than the national average on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Mizzou School of Medicine graduates are trained, evaluated and expected to be competent in their ability to deliver patient-centered care, including their capability to communicate with the patient, family members and colleagues working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
