Joel Shenker, MD, PhD, will step into the role of associate dean for curriculum at the University of Missouri School of Medicine on July 28, following a national search led by Richard J. Barohn, MD, executive vice chancellor for health affairs and Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson dean of the School of Medicine.
“Dr. Shenker is committed to advancing innovative, student-centered curriculum and supporting faculty in delivering exceptional medical education,” said Barohn. “We look forward to his continued leadership and contributions to Mizzou Medicine.”
His work in medical education has been widely recognized, including by the American Academy of Neurology with the Residency Program Director of the Year award, the Gold Humanism Society’s Leonard Towe Humanism in Medicine Award, election to Alpha Omega Alpha, and the Jane Hickman Award, the School of Medicine’s highest teaching honor.
Dr. Shenker earned both his PhD in psychology and his medical degree from the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign. He completed his neurology residency at the University of Virginia and a fellowship in cognitive neurology at the University of Florida. Before joining the University of Missouri in 2011, he held positions as private practice physician, academic physician-scientist and educator.
