M2 Daniel Shyu received a Category I Clinical Research Award during Health Sciences Research Day.
The award was for his summer study titled “Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) MMP-9 as a surrogate for severity of patients with traumatic brain injuries: Identifying associations among biofluid test and clinical data by deep exploratory data-mining.” The study was conducted in the lab of Zezong Gu, MD, PhD.
“Daniel was able to combine his bioengineering background on AI (artificial intelligent) analysis with his clinical practice at MU Health Care to gain some understanding on identification of MMP-9, an important enzyme, as potential biomarker for trauma patients,” Gu said.
The CSF samples and clinical data were collected in collaboration with Stephen Barnes, MD, of the Trauma Critical Care Division.
