Mizzou OCA Preservation System

Osteochondral (bone-cartilage) grafts from organ donors provide a very effective way to treat cartilage defects in the joints that result from trauma, sports, or arthritis. One current problem with this treatment option is that these grafts can only be preserved at an optimal level for clinical use for about one month after they are procured. As such, lots of these grafts “go bad” and have to be thrown away, making availability low and costs high. Dr. Stoker and the COL team, in collaboration with our partners, Drs. Hung and Lima, at Columbia University, have  developed the Mizzou OCA Preservation System, which we have shown to be able to preserve grafts for twice as long as current systems. The next step was to take our basic science data on this and prove it in the real world…which we did…and IT WORKS!
