The Missouri Orthopaedic Institute pediatric orthopaedics team completed more than 90 scoliosis screenings for middle school students at Christian Fellowship School in Columbia earlier this month and is offering these exams free of charge for school-aged children in Missouri.
The screenings typically take less than one minute, promote early detection and optimal management of this common spine problem.
Scoliosis is characterized by an abnormal curvature in the spine that usually occurs during the adolescent growth spurt. Scoliosis can range in severity from mild to severe depending on the size and progression of the curvature in the spine. This type of deformity is known to progress during periods of rapid growth – typically during middle school – and should be closely monitored throughout adolescence to ensure the deformity is properly managed in order to prevent long-term back problems.
The Missouri Orthopaedic Institute pediatric orthopaedics team is encouraging schools to reach out and schedule complimentary screenings for students. Those interested in learning more about scoliosis and other innovative treatments performed at MU Health Care can contact 573-884-6132.
