Elizabeth Malm-Buatsi, MD, won the highest honor in medical education bestowed by the University of Missouri — the Jane Hickman Teaching Award — during the School of Medicine’s annual Education Day on Oct. 8.
Malm-Buatsi is an associate professor of urology who serves as a pediatric urologist at MU Health Care’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Earlier this year, Malm-Buatsi was named a 2020 Young Urologist of the Year by the American Urological Association (AUA) for her efforts and commitment to advancing workforce diversity and mentorship.
Senior associate dean of education and faculty development Michael Hosokawa, EdD, the chairman of the Hickman Award committee, said Malm-Buatsi was described by a third-year student as “extraordinarily approachable, an excellent teacher and an excellent role model for patient-centered care. What better compliment than for a student to say, ‘I want to be like my teacher?’”
Malm-Buatsi was nominated for the award by her peers for her positive attitude, constant encouragement and excellent teaching. In their evaluations, medical students have recognized Malm-Buatsi for her passion for individualized and accountable education. She was applauded for demonstrating the essence of the Jane Hickman Teaching Award through her commitment to patients, students, residents, fellow physicians and other members of the health care team.
Two CoxHealth physicians who work with Springfield Clinical Campus students received awards. Arijit Chowdhury, MD, received the David and Kathy Morton Outstanding Faculty Educator Award, and William Moore, MD, received the Curriculum Board Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards were presented in Springfield by David Haustein, MD, the associate dean of the Springfield Clinical Campus.
Mark Costley, MD, received special recognition and thanks from Hosokawa during Education Day for his service as associate dean from 2018 through 2020 in Springfield before the hiring of Haustein in August.
