Henry Wan, PhD has been elected to the 2024 College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). The distinction recognizes his groundbreaking work studying influenza.

Henry Wan, PhD, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Veterinary Pathobiology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was recently elected to the 2024 College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Wan, who is also the Bond Life Sciences Center principal investigator, was nominated and elected by members of the AIMBE College of Fellows in recognition of his leadership and mentorship pioneering machine learning in influenza vaccine strain selection and significant contributions to influenza evolution and transmission.

Wan’s research focuses on the study of emergence of pathogens like influenza and how to improve the effectiveness of the flu vaccine in disease prevention and control.

“I am deeply humbled to receive this honor,” Wan said. “The success we have achieved here at the University of Missouri is the direct result of the close collaboration and teamwork we have established among the researchers in my lab and throughout the institution. I gratefully accept this prestigious distinction on behalf of my colleagues here at MU.”

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions for medical and biological engineers. Less than two percent of engineers in these fields are selected for this honor. Wan was formally inducted in a ceremony held in Arlington, Virginia on March 25.
