Sources of Funding Opportunities

There are several resources to help you find funding opportunities for your research. Pivot and Foundation Directory are large databases that collect information from many funders. For School of Medicine investigators, these may be most useful for finding opportunities from smaller agencies or private funders. For NIH and Department of Defense funding, the most robust and accurate information is found at their websites.

Depending on the stage of your research — for example, if you need to collect preliminary data — you may wish to consider funding opportunities that are internal to MU and the MU system. Links to this type of funding are also provided below.

In addition to the external and internal funding opportunities below, several pilot funding opportunities are available to MU School of Medicine researchers.

External Funding

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities. NIH Guide announcements of PAs, RFAs and Notices are published daily. You can subscribe to the Current Weekly Table of Contents (TOC) to receive an email with the week’s composite list. NIH Fellowship Supplemental Funding

Based on input from the SOM Research Council, the Dean’s Office provides supplemental funding to support applications for NIH Fellowships (F30: MD/PhD; F31: Pre-doctoral Fellows; F32: Post-doctoral Fellows). Visit the ShowMe Portal (login required) for more details and the application.

Department of Defense/CDMRP

Sign up for email notification about Department of Defense biomedical research funding opportunities available through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). Enter your email address in the form and check the boxes next to the programs of interest to you.

Pivot Funding Opportunities Database

Formerly known as the Community of Science (COS) Pivot is a comprehensive database of funding opportunities provided by the Office of Research to all MU researchers. Its password-protected subscription service allows users to set up automated funding alerts based on keywords and areas of interest. Pivot is a subscription service provided by the Office of Research for all MU researchers. The School of Medicine Grant Writer is happy to assist you in using this service.
