The Child Health Research Institute’s primary mission is to facilitate research activities, scholarship and innovation within the Department of Child Health and the University of Missouri at large with the ultimate goal of fostering optimal health care and wellness to all children living in mid-Missouri and beyond.

Funds research project expenses for medical students/residents under the supervision of a faculty sponsor. CH Hematology/Oncology Gift Fund

Fund is used to provide patients and their families with events and activities to build networks to support within the community. It is also used to fund a staff member to provide medical expertise for one week at Camp Quality (a summer camp for pediatric cancer patients).

This fund is used for patient/family education materials and professional education for primary care providers on the ongoing research for Cystic Fibrosis.

Child Health Unrestricted

Used at the discretion of the Department Chairman, this fund assists with various research projects/presentations, events and patient education materials. This enables the department to provide funding for projects that may nt have a designated funding source. Examples include: Adolescent Medicine (obesity and eating disorders); Infectious Diseases (PANS/PANDAs research); and Pediatric Rheumatology and Immunology. May include student/resident/staff recognition for special projects that impact the needs of our patients and a broad impact on the community.

Our Emergency Medicine Department is thrilled to have an International Emergency Medicine program. This program is still in its infancy stage. While we are able to fund brief away rotations to developing nations for two to four residents annually, there is no funding for faculty who must accompany them, nor for the supplies used during this medical trip.

Muscular Dystrophy Research Fund

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a debilitating and progressive disease that currently has no cure and that causes loss of muscle functions and weakness. Dongsheng Duan, PhD, and others at the University of Missouri are developing gene therapies to fight DMD by restoring normal function to the diseased muscles.

Viruses and Human Health Research Fund

MU researchers are investigating influenza virus, HIV, Ebola virus, HCV, and other deadly human viruses at the molecular and cellular level.  At the same time, they are harnessing useful viruses to combat cancer and to develop gene therapies for genetic diseases.

Tumor Immunology, Onco-therapy and Vaccine Design Research Fund

We are developing new ways to help a patient’s immune system detect, treat, and prevent cancers.  At the same time, we are applying our understanding of immunological memory to improve the design of vaccines against pathogens and cancer.

Diabetes and Autoimmmunity Research Fund

In autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the very cells it was designed to protect. Habib Zaghouani, PhD, and others at the University of Missouri are working on potential treatments that combine adult stem cells with a promising new drug with the potential to accelerate development of treatments for type 1 diabetes and to other autoimmune diseases.

Davis, M.D. Distinguished Professor in Otolaryngology.
