Medical students are eligible to apply for up to $1,500 per student to attend a national conference to present their research findings or for critical career development. In addition, students are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 to support publication expenses in a peer-reviewed journal.

Travel Awards

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be national or international conference.
  • Must have attended within the last 4 months or must be attending within the upcoming 4 months.
  • Must be a current MD or MD-PhD student.
  • If presenting research, the research must have been conducted while an MU MD or MD-PhD  student.
  • Conference must be appropriate for the research presented or for professional development.
  • Student has not received a travel award within the past 12 months.

You will be asked to provide the following information and documentation as part of the Travel Award application process:

  • General Applicant information
  • Program status (M1, M2, M3, M4, MD-PhD)
  • Conference name, date, location, URL
  • Estimated Travel Budget including transportation, meal per diem, conference registration fee, other expenses, and total request.
  • Justification statement of the amount being requested and explanation of how the funds will be used.
  • Justification of attendance in terms of how this conference is related to your research or career development – these details will be critical in reviewing your application (i.e. Presenting your own research, attending on your own, etc.)
  • Name and affiliation of research mentor.
  • Is the presentation the result of the MU School of Medicine Summer Research Fellowship Program?
  • Description of how the remaining costs beyond the award will be funded.
  • Copy of the acceptance notification for presentation, or verification of attendance to the conference
  • Copy of abstract/presentation or letter confirming role in the conference association and/or conference registration if applicable.

Publication Awards

Eligibility Requirements

  • MU Medical student (MD or MD-PhD) must be an author on the publication.
  • Submitted publications must be based on original research conducted at the University of Missouri. Editorials and case reports will not be eligible.
  • Manuscript has either been accepted for publication or has been published within the past 12 months.
  • Student has not received a publication award within the past 12 months.

You will be asked to provide the following information and documentation as part of the Publication Award application process:

  • General Applicant information
  • Requested Amount
  • Program status (M1, M2, M3, M4, MD-PhD)
  • Authorship status: First author or co-author
  • General Information about research mentor/co-author on the publication, including university affiliation?
  • Is the article the result of the MU School of Medicine Summer Research Fellowship Program?
  • Source of any other funding for publication
  • Journal name and URL
  • Journal Impact Factor
  • Is the Journal PubMed indexed?
  • Copy of acceptance notification from publisher
  • Documentation of fees required for publication OR invoice showing amount of publication fees
  • Copy of manuscript or published article
