Researchers at the University of Missouri School of Medicine invite you to participate in a research study to understand how the Flu and COVID-19 influences our body’s immune responses against the virus and how the virus spreads. Participants will be asked to complete short questionnaires, provide blood samples after enrollment and 4 other times (about 7 days, about 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after enrolling)

You are eligible to participate if:

  • You have been diagnosed with the flu or COVID-19 (positive COVID home test or positive test completed at a clinic)
  • Have been sick for less than 5 days
  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • English speaking

What is being asked:

  • Provide a blood sample and nose swab during your initial visit
  • Provide additional 4 blood samples over a six month period
  • Complete a baseline survey about yourself (~10 minutes)
  • Complete follow-up survey at each blood draw (~5 minutes)

Participants will also have the option to participate in a substudy where they will be asked to collect nasal swab samples at home. The nasal swab collection will take about 1 minute per day. A kit containing nasal swabs to take home will be provided. You will bring the collected swabs to your 1-week blood draw appointment.

You will be compensated with a $20 e-gift card for each blood draw (a total of $100) in appreciation for participating in the study and if you are part of the daily swab study, an additional $10 e-gift card for returning the swab kit at your one-week blood draw appointment. A total of $110 is available as compensation for the entire study.
