At the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine we offer comprehensive training in perioperative patient care, pain management and intensive care medicine. Our department houses 28 faculty members who offer education for medical students, including a residency program. We accept five residents per year.

Our faculty and students provide anesthesia services to four locations: University Hospital, Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital and the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute. University Hospital includes a Level I Trauma Center and supports a broad range of surgical exposures in 12 general operating rooms, a same-day surgery program with four operating rooms, and off-site services. University Hospital is rapidly expanding, particularly the cardiovascular and neuroscience subspecialties. Missouri Orthopaedic Institute is the region's largest and most comprehensive freestanding orthopaedic facility with six operating rooms. At MU Women and Children's Hospital, we operate eight operating rooms plus the labor and delivery suite, which includes C-sections.

As MU Health Care expands, our program is redefining itself and growing. We are developing dedicated clinical service lines and are actively recruiting new faculty members. The impact of these changes on residency training is enormous; subspecialty training opportunities that were previously not readily available are becoming a part of the core and advanced clinical experiences.
