The Excellence in Research Mentoring Award recognizes a University of Missouri School of Medicine faculty member for “Excellence in Research Mentoring” in clinical and/or basic science research.

Eligibility

  • Nominees must be MU School of Medicine faculty.
  • Nominees must have served as a mentor to several trainees (Medical students/Graduate students/Post-Docs/Residents/Fellows, Junior and/or Mid-career faculty) over a continuous period at the University of Missouri.
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received this award.
  • Award is given based on merit and distinction and is not guaranteed every year. Only applications that meet the selection criteria will be considered.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Demonstrated continuous success in research mentoring of MU trainees and/or junior faculty.
  • Creates a supportive environment for trainees to engage in research and promotes successful completion of trainee’s research.
  • Evidence of sustained commitment to promote the personal and professional growth and development of research trainees.

Nominations

  • Nomination letters must come from trainees (e.g., medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, post-docs, or MU School of Medicine early-career faculty) (2-pages maximum).
  • Nomination letters should highlight evidence of faculty member’s contributions to research mentoring of trainees and/or junior faculty at MU.

Selection

  • Nominees will be contacted by the MU School of Medicine Research Council.
  • Nominees will be asked by the School of Medicine Research Council to provide a brief description of contribution to mentoring and mentoring philosophy (1-page maximum) and a CV (5 pages maximum).
    • Suggested content might include: the number of trainees mentored, where they are now, examples of how you support mentees, evidence of your unique contribution to their success
  • Nominees will be asked by the School of Medicine Research Council to identify at least one senior MU faculty member (Associate Professor or above) to write letter of support on nominee’s contribution to mentorship (1-page maximum).
  • Applications will be reviewed by the School of Medicine Research Council
  • Award will be presented at the annual Health Sciences Research Day on November 10, 2023; the awardee receives $500 for professional development.
