In February 2019, Dr. Benjamin Burch (resident), Kelly Scott, RN, and Dr. Sumit Gupta (pediatric orthopaedic surgeon) traveled to Mangalore, India and saw patients in clinic and on the ward at KMC Hospital. The team rounded with residents, performed nine surgeries, and gave a lecture.
The Mizzou team worked with other physicians and residents and consulted with about 20 patients. Cases involved mostly club foot, cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, and bladder exstrophy. Procedures performed included club foot release, hip reduction, tendon lengthening, and pelvic osteotomy.
Dr. Gupta rounded with 15 local residents and gave a talk titled, “How to Take Care of Patients with Cerebral Palsy.”
The most memorable part of the trip were the “huge smiles our patients and families had every time we went to see them on the ward,” and Dr. Gupta hopes to return to the same area soon.
