The Summer Research Fellowship Program supports original student research under the direct supervision of an MU School of Medicine faculty member. Students receive stipends while working for 8-10 weeks on-site at the School of Medicine on projects proposed by faculty members.
Rising M2s at the University of Missouri School of Medicine are eligible for this program. Funding of $3,000 is provided for each summer research fellow. Each research fellow will be required to complete IRB training and EHS training, an online research methods course, and attend four workshops. Each fellow also will be required to submit a structured abstract for their summer research poster which will also be presented at the annual Health Sciences Research Day. Detailed dates and instructions will be provided through Canvas to the Summer Research Fellows who have been chosen for this program.
Please note that if IRB approval is required for a project, the IRB determination letter must be uploaded at the time of application to the fellowship. Applications open February 5 and close March 22, 2024.
We are no longer accepting applications.
Project Opportunities & Application
The Research Council solicits research project descriptions from faculty members and distributes them to students near the end of the fall semester. Students pursue projects of interest by directly contacting the appropriate faculty member to discuss project details and student qualifications.

Fellowship Award Considerations
When considering fellowship awards, the Research Council evaluates the potential impact of the research experience on the student’s medical education. During the project, the student and sponsor each will submit reports summarizing the scientific and educational progress made with fellowship support.
