The primary goal of our Dermatology program is to provide excellent clinical training. Our residents receive a comprehensive educational experience in clinical dermatology, dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery. We also ensure protected time for our residents to read and participate in scholarly activities within their normal "duty hours".

Our residents provide dermatologic care to patients at various locations and we have a very close relationship with our primary care colleagues. Our program includes an active inpatient consultation service.

The Department of Dermatology is committed to inclusive excellence, building and actively pursuing a diverse community with varied perspectives.

Students who are members of groups underrepresented in medicine are encouraged to apply to the Visiting Student Diversity Program, which provides an opportunity for fourth year medical students to rotate with the Department of Dermatology as well as a stipend for housing.

Our residents have a 100% board certification rate.

The Department of Dermatology has maintained an active, accredited residency program since 1967. Graduates of the Residency program are found throughout the world in clinical and academic practices. Although our primary focus is clinical dermatology, we do have an ongoing clinical research program, and fourteen graduates of our residency program are currently involved in full-time academic dermatology practices.

History of the program

Dr. Norm Asel established dermatology at the University of Missouri in 1960. We began our residency-training program in 1963 under the direction of Philip C. Anderson, MD. We are unique in our focus on small community and rural dermatology. We are especially proud of our residency program that includes ten trainees and 104 graduated residents. More than 100 other MU medical students have developed an interest in dermatology as a lifetime career, sufficient to enter the specialty through residency programs elsewhere. We have accumulated an "intellectual family" of almost 200 dermatologists during these 40 years of operation.

How to Apply

The University of Missouri’s Department of Dermatology residency program participates in the National Residency Match Program and takes applications for residency exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) each fall. Applicants interested in applying for residency, whether current medical students, international medical graduates, or previously unmatched applicants, should apply directly through ERAS.

To be considered, an applicant must have completed their ERAS application process, including:

  • Completed ERAS application form
  • Med School transcript
  • USMLE Step 1 scores
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Completed applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty and residents.   There are limited interview spaces available, and they will fill on a first-come, first-served basis once invitations have gone out. All applicants will be notified of the dispensation of their file.

IMGA Students-Additional Requirements

  • J-1 visa or H-1B visa
  • Full unrestricted medical license

Application Information

Accepting applications: September 6, 2023 through ERAS
Application deadline: September 27, 2023

* We will also be participating in the ERAS/AAMC Supplemental Application

For the 2022 ERAS® cycle, our program strongly encourages all applicants to complete a supplemental ERAS application, offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program.

Applicants also will be required to complete the MyERAS application.

The additional information will help our program staff learn more about applicants’ medical education journey, including more meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences, and help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission.

This supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform outside the MyERAS application and must be completed between September 1 and September 30.

Applicants are also encouraged to apply for the preliminary PGY1 residency positions in the department of Internal Medicine. Applicants are not required to interview separately with the Medicine department and will be ranked according to the Dermatology department rank list.  Information regarding the preliminary position year will be provided during Dermatology interviews.
