In January 2023, pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gupta and MU senior resident Dr. Matthew Resnick joined a mission trip to India comprised of surgical teams from Missouri, Texas, Minnesota, as well as Switzerland and Germany. In all, 65 children were able to receive surgery, with a variety of subspecialists including orthopaedics, spinal, general, and urological surgeons.
Dr. Resnick feels that the trip will have long lasting benefits for his training and career. He reported, "The stress of day-to-day life in medicine can accumulate with concerns regarding case preparation, education, and constantly increasing administrative duties. As a result, it can be easy to lose sight of why we do what we do. Taking care of people who truly need help and would otherwise not have access to care has renewed and refocused my drive as a surgeon and I hope to have opportunities to continue this type of work for the rest of my career. I can't thank the UMOA enough for the opportunity to be a part of this trip".
