In January 2024, pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gupta and MU orthopedic senior resident Dr. Chirag Sheth joined the Peedh Parai international group’s annual medical mission in Nagpur, India. Working with a global team, they performed 23 of the 100 surgeries completed, providing vital care to underserved pediatric patients.
The team included specialists in orthopedics (general and spine), general surgery, urology, and pediatric gastroenterology, with members from Missouri, Texas, Michigan, and Virginia, as well as Switzerland, Italy, and England. During the mission, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Sheth performed 23 surgeries, contributing to the team’s total of 100 procedures—delivering specialized and essential care to underserved pediatric patients in India.
After the trip Dr. Sheth reported, “During the rigors of medical training, both medical school and residency, it is easy to forget what the true meaning of being a doctor is. This trip allowed me to re-center myself and remind myself of why I got into medicine. I hope to build off this trip and continue to give back to underserved communities throughout my career. I can’t thank Dr. Gainor and the UMOA enough for the opportunity to be a part of this special trip.”
