Surgery Resident

How large is your program?

We recruit four categorical general surgery residents annually. Our intern class includes up to seven non-designated preliminary residents and two designated preliminary residents. Additionally, two integrated plastic surgery residents spend portions of their first three years with general surgery.

What is your accreditation status?

We hold full accreditation status with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a five-year general surgery training program.

What is your American Board of Surgery pass rate?

We share the number one position in the country with only a handful of other programs. Our pass rate for first-time test takers for both the ABS Certifying and Qualifying examinations is 100 percent.

What are your graduates doing after they’ve finished training?

Because of their excellent surgical training, our graduates are prepared to enter private practice, which approximately 50 percent of them do. As an academic medical center, we have the resources and ability to provide opportunities for the approximately 50 percent of Mizzou general surgery residents who enter fellowship following graduation.

How do you manage call?

We utilize a night float system. An intern, midlevel resident (PGY2 or 3) and a senior resident (PGY4 or 5) function as our night float team for each block. Night float begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Weekend calls (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning) are divided among residents who are not on night float.

What is your philosophy regarding duty hour restrictions?

Training conditions and work schedules follow the guidelines of the Surgery Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We monitor the work hours of all residents. If problems arise, we work diligently and swiftly to correct the root cause to ensure we are not only maintaining the highest level of resident satisfaction, but also maximizing learning opportunities.

What is your vacation policy?

We offer three weeks of vacation annually dependent upon PGY level.

What salary and benefits packages do you offer?

Our program provides a wide range of benefits, including malpractice insurance, personal health insurance, short and long-term disability insurance, and a 24-hour physicians lounge with self-serve food.

We follow institutional guidelines regarding salary and benefits packages, which are based upon PGY level and are set by the University of Missouri. Details can be found here.

How do you support resident research?

Research is a valued portion of academic surgery and we fully support it. Resident travel for presentations is encouraged and supported through several fiscal mechanisms.

Is there an education or “book” fund available to residents?

Yes, we offer an educational stipend that may be utilized for books, extracurricular courses or meeting travel.

Do you sponsor J1 visas?

We do not usually sponsor J1 visas for residency training.

How do I apply?

Mizzou surgery participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and follows all NRMP guidelines. Applications are only considered through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Each application is reviewed with focus on academic excellence, leadership experience and potential and applicant resilience. Qualified individuals will be invited to interview during selected dates in November and December, with variable dates in January.
