Researchers at the University of Missouri School of Medicine have access to grant writing resources. Grant writers, Cynthia Haydon and Martha Brendel, can help researchers identify opportunities and throughout their proposal-writing process.

Identifying opportunities

  • Help finding funding opportunities
    • Internal (for example: Research Council)
    • External, including training with Pivot and Foundation Directory, tracking on funding opportunities from funders including the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense
  • Assist in registering with funding search databases and setting up funding alerts
  • Help identify potential collaborators and using NIH Project Reporter
  • Locate samples of proposals funded by specific agencies
  • Help find and contact the appropriate agency Program Officers

Proposal-writing process

  • Develop proposal-writing timelines and help to keep the process moving along on schedule
  • Provide in-depth knowledge of the funding opportunity and its requirements
  • Help with biosketch format and requirements
  • Provide sample text and draft commonly requested documents (facilities, University information and history, department/division information, organizational charts, etc.)
  • Respond to questions regarding compliance with MU, School of Medicine, and department/division grant policies and regulations
  • Coordinate collaborative/center or program project grant proposals
  • Collect data from departments for training grants
  • Work with faculty to develop budgets and budget justifications
  • Work with subcontract entities to get required documents
  • Assist with grant application forms and assist with submission processes
  • Create basic graphics, figures and tables
  • Draft and solicit letters of support/commitment
  • Edit copy for consistency, correctness, voice, and/or compliance with agency guidelines

Special situations

• Editing manuscripts for journal articles
• Help with compliance with NIH Public Access Policy, including training in the use of myNCBI.

Bio

Martha Brendel graduated from the University of Missouri in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She has worked as a writer and editor for the MU News Bureau, the University of Missouri System and the Missouri Association of Realtors. Martha has worked in the MU School of Law Advancement Office and as grants coordinator for The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. As part of the SOM Office of Research, Martha provides support services to researchers from proposal conception through writing, editing, budget development and submission.
