The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Missouri School of Medicine is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program designed to educate and train cardiologists to be able to independently provide exemplary care in the field of interventional cardiology. Our goal is to provide the highest quality training in a patient centered collaborative learning environment that fosters excellence in interventional cardiology.

Clinical Training

The interventional cardiology fellow in our program receives individualized training at University Hospital at the University of Missouri in Columbia, as well as the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, which is adjacent to University Hospital. Both hospitals have 24/7 cardiac catheterization labs with state-of-the-art equipment and experienced staff. Our team of dedicated full-time academic interventional cardiologists routinely perform complex and high-risk PCIs with additional expertise in chronic total occlusion and structural interventions.

Interventional fellows that graduate from our program well exceed the minimum requirements set by the ACGME and COCATS with over 400 PCIs yearly as primary operators. Many of these procedures are high risk and complex as we are the only academic tertiary care center in mid-Missouri. We are a State of Missouri Level 1 STEMI Center with many transfers for primary PCI due to our central geographic location. Fellows are well trained in primary PCI, intracoronary imaging, hemodynamic support devices, atherectomy (rotational, orbital, laser), bifurcation and CTO techniques. Interventional fellows can also perform structural interventions if interested during their one-year fellowship. Interventional fellows have a weekly outpatient interventional cardiology clinic to evaluate patients before and after cardiac procedures for longitudinal care.

In addition to clinical training, interventional fellows participate in our weekly dedicated interventional cardiology didactics that cover the necessary core knowledge. Cath film review, journal club and quality improvement initiative discussions are also scheduled during these weekly meetings with all the interventional cardiology faculty. Interventional fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activity through either individually initiated research projects, local or multicenter national trials. We have a robust research program with a dedicated cardiology research office and staff. Interventional fellows also have the opportunity to mentor, teach and collaborate with other fellows and residents in a supportive educational environment.

At the conclusion of the fellowship program, our past interventional cardiology fellows have demonstrated outstanding clinical knowledge with a 100% interventional cardiology board pass rate as well as outstanding clinical judgement, professionalism and the procedural skillset needed for careers in interventional cardiology.

Applications

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications must include the completed ERAS application form/CV, three letters of recommendation (including cardiovascular disease fellowship program director), personal statement and USMLE/COMLEX transcript.

We are currently accepting one fellow per year to our interventional fellowship program. We have filled our PGY7 position for the academic year 2024-25.

We will be participating in the interventional cardiology match by National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for the position that starts in academic year July 2025 - June 2026. Via ERAS, applications can be accepted starting in July 2024.
