Medical students and health professionals at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and throughout Missouri have an opportunity to learn using some of the most advanced technology in health care simulation.

Sim Center

The Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Clinical Simulation Center opened in May 2008 in the seven-story Clinical Support and Education (CSE) Building connected to the west side of the University of Missouri’s medical school and hospital complex thanks to a $2.3 million gift from Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden. The gift provided operational funds for the center and equipment, such as high-fidelity simulators and task trainers, to be used in medical instruction. High-fidelity simulators represent a new wave of medical education. The advanced technology built into the simulators allows students to perform various medical procedures while receiving real-time feedback in much the same way they would from a human patient. The simulators breathe, have a pulse, have eyes that dilate and can react to various drugs. The experience for students is invaluable.

The center has continued to expand its reach with the opening of additional space within the Patient-Centered Care Learning Center (PCCLC) building, Women's Hospital and at the Springfield Clinical Campus. Combined resources equal:

  • Nearly 30,000 square feet across all locations
    • 10,000 square feet in the CSE building in Columbia
    • 13,000 square feet in the PCCLC building in Columbia
    • 6,000 square feet located at Mercy Hospital in Springfield
    • Additional shared space at Women's Hospital in Columbia
  • 30 fully equipped examination rooms
  • 12 multipurpose simulation rooms with presentation technology
  • 13 observation and control rooms
  • 1 Cerner Smart Room, a hospital “room of the future”
  • 4 debrief/conference rooms
  • 2 conference rooms with presentation technology
  • Administrative offices

To accommodate simulation training and assessment in a variety of hospital, clinical, educational and other settings throughout Missouri, the Shelden Clinical Simulation Center has Mobile Simulation units that include a 30-foot RV and two ambulances. All units can be outfitted to operate with any of our high-fidelity simulators and scenarios. One ambulance is housed at our Springfield location and the other remains at our Columbia location. All mobile resources are available for use state wide.

Remembering the Sheldens

After earning a degree in chemistry at MU and completing two years at the university’s medical school, Russell Shelden finished his medical training at Washington University in St. Louis. During 32 years at the Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, he practiced anesthesiology and served as president of the medical staff. Beginning in 1958, Shelden traveled to Columbia to help support the School of Medicine’s anesthesiology residency program. He attained the rank of clinical professor before retiring in 1983. Shelden and his wife, Mary, were some of MU’s most generous philanthropists. Their gifts to MU include funding for two endowed chairs in anesthesiology, an academic resource center for student-athletes and the medical school’s clinical simulation center. MU awarded Shelden an honorary doctorate in May 2007.

Mission

The Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Clinical Simulation Centers use a broad range of simulation methods to educate students and health care professionals to provide effective patient-centered care.

Vision

The centers enhance all levels of medical education from novice to practicing health care professionals. Individuals and teams build competency through experiential learning, assessment and feedback. Patient-centered simulation and simulated participant encounters provide structured practice in a safe environment with a focus on:

  • Health, safety and satisfaction of our patients
  • Clinical knowledge and decision-making
  • Communication skills
  • Situational awareness
  • Professionalism
  • Compassion
  • Respect
  • Collaborative teamwork
  • Ethical behavior
  • High-quality, effective care

The center is dedicated to the continuous improvement of people and processes and the transformation of health care education through research, hard work, lifelong learning, and clinical and academic excellence.

Values

  • The health and safety of our patients is our first priority.
  • We choose to be ethical in all situations.
  • We cultivate an environment of trust, collaboration, respect, honesty, teamwork and constructive feedback.
  • We hold ourselves responsible in our duty to our patients, colleagues and learners. We will not permit consideration of religion, nationality, race, sexual orientation, party politics or social standing to intervene.
  • The attitudes, values and behaviors of future physicians are shaped by the social and cultural milieu of the institution. All of our interactions will model the professionalism expected of health care professionals.
  • Learning requires trust in the value of knowledge, the process of discovery and the importance of feedback. We strive to achieve the most effective learning environment by engaging in activities designed to promote critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, evaluation and analysis of actions, both individually and as part of a team.
  • We aspire to an excellence that is achieved through diligent effort, both individual and collective. Pursuing excellence means being satisfied with no less than the highest goals we can envision.
  • Through research and evidence-based practice, we provide realistic experiences in all phases of professional development, thus proving our commitment to lifelong learning and discovery.
