MedPrep 3 is a workshop for students accepted into the MU School of Medicine and paid the deposit. There are two types of primers: academic and professional development. The academic primers help students review the areas of anatomy, biochemistry, cell physiology, and pharmacology before the school year begins. The professional development primer addresses topics that help students increase cultural awareness and build community.

Registration is open: REGISTER HERE

The reviews, called primers, are available for six weeks through Canvas, and students can access the materials anywhere they have an Internet connection. Experienced medical school faculty who are subject matter experts in each discipline developed the primers. Current medical students carefully selected for their competence and subject matter expertise will facilitate the subject reviews.

  • Academic Primers: June 10 – July 21, 2024 (Online only)
  • Professional Development Primer: July 1 – July 26, 2024 (Online) (Four weeks online and one-day on-site activity) July 26, 2024 (On-site)

Session Overview

Anatomy Primer

Instructors: Allison Nesbitt, PhD
Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $50
Topic: The anatomy primer provides students with an overview of regional gross anatomy that parallels the MU 1st year anatomy curriculum. Each lecture includes an introduction to the anatomy of a given region, relevant systemic principles, a component of the challenging autonomic nervous system, and examples of radiology.

Biochemistry Primer

Instructor: Peter A. Wilden, PhD
Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $50
Topic: The biochemistry primer provides incoming students with material related to biological chemistry and biochemistry. The level of exposure will be similar to an advanced undergraduate course. The topics will cover basic organic and biological chemistry concepts essential in understanding the biochemistry of basic cellular building blocks (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, etc.) and metabolic processes related to these compounds. Other topics covered include the basics of genetics, molecular biology, enzyme function and regulation.

Cell Physiology Primer

Instructor: Peter A. Wilden, PhD
Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $50
Topic: The cell physiology primer provides incoming students with material related to cellular structure and function. The level of exposure will be similar to an advanced undergraduate course. The topics will cover membrane structure and function, including lipids, proteins and transport. Additionally, cellular organelle structure and function will be covered. Other topics covered include vesicle trafficking, cell communication, intracellular signaling, cytoskeleton, molecular motors, cell-cycle, cell growth, cell differentiation and apoptosis.

Pharmacology Primer

Instructor: Stephen P. Halenda, PhD
Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $50
Topic: The pharmacology primer provides incoming students with material related to pharmacological principles. The level of exposure will be similar to an advanced undergraduate course. Basic terminology and concepts in pharmacology, including processes of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, mechanism of action, and rational choice of drugs. We will emphasize the integrative nature of pharmacology, which combines principles of physiology, biochemistry, and pathophysiology.

Professional Development Primer

Facilitators: Andrea Simmons, EdD
Length: 4 weeks online and 1 day on-site; Online: July 1 – July 26, 2024. On-site: July 26, 2024.
Topic: The purpose of the online workshop is to build community with the School of Medicine’s inclusive excellence partners and the entering class to promote an inclusive health care community and foster on-going relationships. It also provides resources and tools to train participants as peer educators who will continue to create a culture of acceptance and belonging in the School of Medicine. Each week will progress into the next and the last week will lead up to the onsite visit and activity on Friday July, 26, 2024.
