The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division is an established and integral part of our Emergency Medicine Department.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) crew

Who We Are

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Division is a dynamic, growing division of the Emergency Medicine Department at the University of Missouri. We are a diverse group of providers that support each other in a multitude of different academic interests, including medical education, quality improvement, ultrasound, research, advocacy, among many others. We are known for our expertise in caring for ill and injured children, our passion for sharing our unique knowledge with learners, and our commitment to providing quality care to families from all backgrounds.

Our Practice Environment

Our pediatric emergency department is a private 16-bed unit which includes 2 large procedural bays for resuscitation of critically ill and injured children. We partner with a multitude of other pediatric subspecialty services including PICU, NICU, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, infectious disease, hematology/oncology, and many others. We serve a diverse population of patients from both Columbia’s urban metro area as well as more than 20 surrounding rural counties. Our close-knit group of providers, pediatric nurses, and child life specialists provides a warm, community medicine-feel with all of the amenities of a large, academic medical center.

Opportunities to Mentor and Educate

We are proud to provide PEM training to residents from multiple programs, including emergency medicine, pediatrics, combined internal medicine and pediatrics, and family medicine. We also supervise and educate medical students on their emergency medicine and pediatrics clerkships, as well as senior medical students taking PEM elective rotations. PEM is truly its own subspecialty, requiring attainment of knowledge and skills that are distinct from both general emergency medicine and pediatrics, and our division offers ongoing opportunities for mentorship and education through formal lecture, small group discussions, and on-shift, bedside clinical teaching.

Opportunities for Research

The Department of Emergency Medicine provides significant support to all PEM providers interested in research. The EM Department Research Section can assist in all steps of research and QI initiatives, including conceptualization and study design, grant applications, IRB approval, patient enrollment, chart review, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation. Medical students interested in emergency medicine and pediatrics are also available to assist with faculty research through a summer research fellowship and/or EM research elective rotation. Involvement in multiple residency programs also provides ample opportunity to mentor residents in PEM-focused research projects.
