The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Pediatric Acute Care Fellowship is a rigorous 12-month post-graduate training that combines didactics with bedside clinical instruction to prepare graduates for a rewarding Pediatric Acute Care Medicine career.

Pediatric ED Expansion

The training comprises 70% of the clinical time at the Level-1 Pediatric Trauma Center and the remainder on rotations including Pediatric ICU, Pediatric wards, Urgent care, Orthopedics, procedures/anesthesia, and ultrasound rotations.

Fellows in the program will work primarily with and under the supervision of Pediatric Emergency Medicine board-certified physicians and on rotations, will work under the supervision of EM-trained APPs, pediatricians, anesthesiologists and other pediatric specialists.

The fellowship offers a competitive salary, CME stipend, full University Benefits on day 1, including liability insurance, health insurance, retirement & employee assistance program. After successfully completing the program, fellows receive a certificate of completion from the University of Missouri and will be prepared to obtain their NCCPA Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medicine Exam (EM-CAQ).

As Pediatric Acute Care Medicine fellows, FNP/PNP/PA participate in the following activities:

  • Rotate through the Emergency Department, PICU, Pediatric wards, Urgent Care, Orthopedics, and anesthesia
  • Specialty training with a rotation in ultrasonography
  • Receive hands-on experience to prepare for supervised bedside interventions
  • Receive procedural training within rotations
  • Attend and participate in grand rounds, journal club, departmental lectures, conferences, and lectures by guest speakers

Entry checklist

  • Must be a certified PA or graduate eligible to be certified by NCCPA
  • Or a certified Family Nurse Practitioner or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and eligible for certification by an approved national licensing body, such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board and Certification from a state nursing licensing board

Curriculum

  • 2-week Boot Camp with orientation, faculty lectures, SIM labs, and high-yield specialty topics to prepare fellows prior to starting the program
  • Direct bedside teaching by EM Physicians, APPs, Intensivist and surgeons
  • Initial staffing on learner schedule with progression to more autonomy the last 6 months
  • Assigned monthly ROSH review questions and access to a self-paced question bank
  • Participation in weekly didactic EM conference with EM residents led by board-certified EM faculty & guest lectures
  • Monthly SIM cases and quarterly Journal Club
  • Monthly chart review with feedback
  • Monthly procedure log tracking for EM-specific procedures and Participation in research projects
  • Case Report write up and Quality Improvement project
  • Attendance at Pediatric Conference
  • ACLS/PALS/NRP/BLS certifications
  • ATLS course registration fee
